Which Land Rover is for You?

Let’s be completely honest: choosing which Land Rover you want can be a confusing time.

It used to be pretty simple and straightforward to make your mind up. If you wanted to go mud-plugging, you would buy a Defender. If you wanted to tow a horsebox, you go for a Discovery. If you wanted to turn up at an expensive restaurant looking like a million bucks, you bought yourself a Range Rover.

Today, JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) works as what we know as a "House of Brands," selling a huge, overlapping lineup of luxurious, and yet highly capable cars. Some focus on performance, some on luxury, and others on rough endurance.

If you are looking at a line of these premium SUVs on our forecourt and you're questioning which one actually suits your lifestyle, this is the deepest, most honest breakdown you will find.

aThe "House of Brands" Cheat Sheet

As a generic overview, here is how you can separate their three makor product lines.

The Range Rover Family

If your priority is to make a statement, having serious road presence, and interior luxury, you are shopping in the Range Rover family. These are vehicles engineered to separate you from the outside world entirely.

The Standard Range Rover

  • What is it? The absolute peak of luxury SUVs. You can choose between Standard (SWB) or Long Wheelbase (LWB).

  • Who is it for? Executive transport. If you want to sit in the back while a chauffeur winds their way through traffic, or you simply want the one of the most luxurious vehicles money can buy, this is the one.

  • The Standout Feature: Complete noise cancellation. It has microphones in the wheel arches as well as speakers in the headrests which cancel out road noise and make the cabin feel like a private vault.

Range Rover Sport

  • What is it? A sharper, more athletic version of the standard RR. It shares much of the same prestige but is made for the driver rather than the rear passenger.

  • Who is it for? The spirited driver who still requires a large luxury SUV but who wants to enjoy it while driving on a twisty B road.

  • The Sport SVR & SV Legacy: For many years, the top of the range model in the Sport series was the famous SVR (with JLR’s shrieking supercharged 5.0 litre V8 with 575 HP). In the newer generation, JLR has replaced it with the Range Rover Sport SV - ditching the supercharger for a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 pushing out an insane 626 HP. It also features "6D Dynamics" hydraulic air suspension, which virtually eliminates body roll in the corners.

Range Rover Velar

  • What is it? An all-design focused and mid-size luxurious SUV which fits perfectly in between the Evoque and the Sport.

  • Who is it for? The fashionable buyer with its highly sleek and flush-fitted door handles, highly minimalist dual touch-screen interiors, and coupé-style roof line.

  • The Downside: Due to its highly sloping roof line, it loses some of the head room which is expected of a Range Rover and the boot room offered by the bigger versions.

Range Rover Evoque

  • What is it? The entry point to the Range Rover brand. A premium, compact SUV designed heavily for urban environments.

  • Who is it for? This can include couples, city commuters, and even small families who would like the prestige, premium interior materials, and elevated seating position offered by the Range Rover, but in a package which is more easily parked.

The Defender Family

The modern Defender is a design masterclass. It salutes the legendary and box-shaped farm utility vehicles from days past, but inside it’s a state-of-the-art and highly luxurious monocoque SUV that handles extremely well on the pavement but simply can’t be stopped off-road.

Defender 90

  • What is it? The short-wheelbase, three-door model.

  • Who is it for? Singles, couples, or those looking for an easy-to-handle 4x4 that looks cool.

  • The Catch: The rear seat access is difficult and the luggage space is not very generous. It is purchased because of the funky looks, not for school runs.

Defender 110

  • What is it? The sweet spot. The standard five-door, five-seat (or optional 5+2) family adventure vehicle.

  • Who is it for? Active families, dog owners, and outdoor enthusiasts.

  • The Standout Feature: Inside, there are materials which are very tough and resistant, and there is a tough rubber flooring. If the children get inside with their muddy shoes, or your dog is drenched from head to toe, you can clean the whole cabin!

Defender 130

  • What is it? The extended-body version, designed to seat up to eight adults (or children) in a 2-3-3 configuration across three proper rows of seats.

  • Who is it for? Large families who need massive carrying capacity but don't want to drive a traditional MPV or van.

The Defender OCTA

  • What is it? Released as the ultimate, hardcore high-performance Defender.

  • Who is it for? The buyer who wants the absolute best of everything. It borrows the brutal 626 HP twin-turbo V8 and the active 6D Dynamics hydraulic suspension from the Range Rover Sport SV, but pairs them with 33-inch all-terrain tyres, a wider track, and unique "OCTA" driving modes. It is Land Rover's answer to high-speed desert runners, capable of doing 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds on tarmac while wading through nearly a metre of water.

The Discovery Family

If you care less about chasing lap times or showing off at the golf club, and care entirely about family capability, towing, and clever space management, you are a Discovery buyer.

The Discovery (Full-Size "Disco")

  • What is it? A massive, exceptionally comfortable seven-seat family cruiser.

  • Who is it for? It's for the whole family! It has seven full-size seating positions in a 'stadium' style arrangement where each row is raised a little higher than the one before it. This way, people sitting in the back won't get motion sickness in the car.

  • The Towing King: It can tow 3,500 kg and uses tow assist technology that assists you in controlling the vehicle when reversing a trailer.

Discovery Sport

  • What is it? An intelligent and medium-sized family SUV that provides 5+2 seating in a small package.

  • Who is it for? For families who require occasional additional seating for their friends or relatives but want a car which will be manageable in everyday driving conditions.

  • The Vibe: Extremely functional, very versatile and slightly more rugged than the Range Rover Evoque.

So, Which One is Actually Right for You?

To make it really simple, match your primary need to the target below:

"I want to feel like a VIP and drive the fastest, most prestigious SUV on the road." ???? Your Choice: Range Rover Sport (specifically looking for a late-model SVR for that legendary V8 rumble, or a newer SV / Flagship Range Rover).

"I have dogs, kids who love to get dirty, and outdoor adventures, and want something that looks incredibly cool and rugged."???? Your Choice: Defender 110 (or step up to the monstrous OCTA if your budget allows for peak performance).

"I need to carry up to 7 people regularly, tow heavy trailers, and want a pure, stress-free family vehicle." ???? Your Choice: Discovery (Full-Size).
